[ unfortunately, while the ultimate life form can do everything alone, that doesn't mean there aren't consequences. he loses time, he gets battered and bruised, and sometimes his anger gets the better of him which means he's more destructive than normal. this time, it isn't anger that drives him, there's some sort of hesitance, he's unsure, and he can only think back to what was said to him. is this path that he's taken for himself the wrong one, is there a consequence if he doesn't heed her words — he's unable to be a hero, it isn't like him, but when maria spoke to him there was some hope for his future.
shadow's eyes widen for a brief moment at noticing rouge stutter in flight, and he quickly pushes himself up from where he was. his shoes activate, gliding him along the ground. despite being directly underneath her, if she loses her balance in the air and the guns still shooting beams in her direction, he could in fact lose her. his "life" doesn't mean that much, he doesn't have that to lose anymore, but her own on the other hand is something that he's in the position to ensure isn't in danger.
he uses the wall to ricochet off of, boosting himself in her direction to catch her in mid-air with relative ease. it's at the same time that with her in his arms that both the beams from the weapons on both side has locked onto easy targets, and have already proceeded in shooting in their direction. he wastes time, rather than attempting to move out the way, his gaze lingers on the injury on her wing.
