... Wouldn't you want it?
[ he probably won't appreciate it as much as she would... or as much as Linus and Lloyd did. He isn't like them. ]
no subject
[She tilts her head, but to her, it's not really that difficult a concept, honestly.]
Since it's one of my favorites, I really want to know what you think!
[Since Jaffar is also her favorite....so two favorites together = profit!!!]
no subject
Oh. His eyes widen a little bit in surprise. ]
... It's so sweet.
[ yeah, someone definitely hasn't had chocolate in a long time... or ever. ]
no subject
Heheh, right?
[Of course she likes sweet things, she's Nino.]
It's so good! I can't eat very many at once [or else, they'd probably both get sick] but they're really tasty and fun to share!
[Before, it was with Lloyd and Linus. Now? It's Jaffar, and she's satisfied with that.]
no subject
Jaffar nods once again. It is... tasty. Typically, he doesn't think of food as tasty or not - being edible is all that matters. An assassin - a weapon like him didn't need to enjoy anything. But now, as he eats the chocolate Nino gave him, he thinks that it's tasty. And that he likes it. Since meeting her, he'd begun to like many things.
(Nino herself, of course, being number one on that list.) ]
... [ still, once he's swallowed, he seems to hesitate again. Her comment makes him start to wonder again. And, after a moment, he gives in to his curiosity - since, for some reason, his insides feel a little twisted thinking about it. ] ... Did you... share chocolates with everyone?
[ it's a weird question, probably, but he says it in his usual gravelly voice, glancing up at her with his usual unreadable expression - only his hesitation in asking it colors the reasoning behind it. ]
no subject
She doesn't seem to notice his hesitation at first, swinging a leg idly as she picks through the box until she's selected the perfect chocolate for herself. Success--!
And then she almost drops it when he asks that, bobbling it before she somehow manages to save it from an untimely spill to the ground.
Whew...]
W-what? [It's an embarrassing question... it's embarrassing, because now she has to admit...!]
That's, um... [She ducks her head, face bright red.] No... just with you, Jaffar... [Is he going to think that's weird...?]
no subject
Oh.
He blinks at her downturned face. She's bright red all the way to her ears - he can tell she's blushing even when he can't see her expression. Why is she so embarrassed to admit this to him? Jaffar doesn't think she's scared of him anymore. He's too ignorant to understand it's the exact same reason he was shy to ask her in the first place. ]
... I see. [ even so... he feels whatever's left of his heart beat a little bit faster. it's both kind of frightening and exhilirating. ] Thank you.
[ for a few moments, that awkward answer is all he gives. But then, he adds, a little quietly: ] ... That makes me... happy... Is that strange?
no subject
It makes him...happy?
She can't really sort through her own feelings; it's a rush of so many of them, most of all glee. But what she knows is that she succeeded at one of her main goals in life.
She's made Jaffar happy. She's given him something to enjoy, something to embrace beyond what a horrible life he'd had before, and that's what's most important of all. More than her feelings, more than how she wants to stay with him, she wants him to be happy.]
Oh, really? I'm so glad, Jaffar!
[...Wait, focus.]
I mean, no, it's not strange at all! I think, um...sharing chocolate with friends would make anyone happy!
no subject
Jaffar nods in response, understanding, as if she'd just answered a math problem for him instead of a matter of common sense, but only for a second; then, he shakes his head just once. ]
... I wouldn't know. You are the only one who shares things with me.
[ it might sound pitiful, but he delivers it in the same monotone matter-of-fact way he usually does when he talks about himself. He suspects Nino will continue to be the only one sharing things other than weapons with him for the rest of his tenure in this army. Unlike her, he's done nothing to ingratiate himself with the others; a good handful of them actively dislike him, in truth. She's made plenty of friends, naturally. But he's okay with that. It makes this act of hers that much more special. ]
You have many people you care about... but you chose me.
[ that's the actual reason he's happy. He almost wants to ask why she'd do that, but he thinks that would seem -- imprudent. Instead, there's only the faint hint of a question in his expression, mixed with something a little warmer. ]
no subject
But it's okay.
Things have to get better. They're in a better place now, and... and they'll get better for Jaffar, too. Even if Nino has to drag people over to be his friend personally.
More importantly, there's the hint of a question to his statement, and it seems all too obvious to her.]
Of course I did. You're... [Really, her everything in so many ways. The last vestigial tie to her family, the last thing she has that's part of a past equally painful and warm. But also... he's just Jaffar, and he's important to her in every possible way.] ...You're my best friend! There isn't anyone else that I'd want to share these with!
[Just Jaffar.
It's always just Jaffar, and while "best friend" doesn't really encompass her feelings... it's a good start.]
no subject
He'd said the same thing to her not too long ago - he remembers struggling to find the words that might fit their relationship, how he sees her, and coming up with that. Hearing her echo them back to him is almost as gratifying as seeing her reaction back at that time. So she thinks of him the same way - a friend more special than any other in the army. Jaffar, he only has one friend to begin with, but Nino has a lot. And all of these things are, perhaps, things that he should have assumed from the very start of this, when she came to give him the gift in the first place...
But Jaffar has never had anything of his own, especially a friend. He won't even consider taking his first and only one so far for granted.
Luckily, it's obvious that he isn't. ]
... Nino... Thank you. [ he repeats himself - he feels that he's said that a lot in this conversation, but he can't help but say it again. This girl does too much for him. Jaffar smiles, a little - it's small, but unmistakable. ] ... You will always be my best friend. The next time... I will bring something to share with you. I promise this.
[ it's kind of... fun? is he allowed to have fun? he feels so happy when he's with her. ]
