Normally, Cinnabar would prefer to have a few years to process this information before forming a proper opinion on it, but Phos seems to determined to leave them with only a few minutes to make up their mind. Because now Phos wants to involve them, too. (They always seem to.) ]

... What happens after that? If your plan works? [ a beat. ] What happens to Sensei and the others?

[ every inclusion in their body is telling them this is a bad idea. The moon is a void, a hole that sucks gems away, never to return - a hive of villains, coming to hurt them and their friends. Setting foot there is the same as "death" for an animal.

And yet.

They have to ask; they can't turn away from this. Because Phos came for them. And as much as they wish that didn't mean anything - and as much as they pretend it doesn't - it means quite a lot. ]

They think that more has happened today, and this past month or so, than has ever happened before in their entire existence - all 1000 years of it. Phos's return. Phos's plea. Phos's destruction. The words that mint-green gem carved into their chest all those summers ago never seemed more false and far away than they did when Cinnabar held a wooden box full of shards from their face in their hands, their gloves pulled carefully, gingerly tight so as not to hurt them even more. Cinnabar hadn't believed them. But Cinnabar had never wanted to believe someone more in their whole life. Now that belief is literally in pieces, and as they finish covering the tiny coffin with sand, they feel the last shreds of their hope for better, special, more fun buried with it.

Normally, at times like this, they're sure they'd go sit by themselves in their cave. Maybe poison would leak from their eyes, as it often does during times of stress. But that part of their life has changed, too. Now they're back at the school, instead, going to see their partner - something they never thought they'd ever have. And they certainly never would have imagined that partner would be Bort. They feel a familiar pang of guilt seeing their short-cut hair, but say nothing. They know Bort doesn't want to hear any more apologies from them. ]

... It's finished.

[ they don't meet Bort's eyes, nor do they stand particularly close - it's still hard for them - but there's no mistaking they're addressing their junior gem. ]

Naturally, they would never admit they were actually concerned about them; they refuse to admit as much even to themself, despite how it shows in their expressions and the shape of their poison (which, fortunately, no one ever sees.) They're a bizarre presence in Cinnabar's life, ever-shifting, always changing both Cinnabar's life and their own in ways that Cinnabar is never sure how to feel about - good, bad, both, neither, they all end up melting together in the chaos Phos brings. For a brief moment, it had seemed like they'd brought a miracle back with them: they'd survived the moon. Cinnabar didn't approach, of course. They listened and watched from far away, as always. And the more they learned, the more that miracle seemed like an illusion, and the more they felt the ominous sensation that Phos might not have survived at all.

Cinnabar would also never admit that Phos is the current subject of most of their thoughts tonight. They climb up from their cave with the same footholds they always use and retrace the same steps they've always taken for centuries, walking along the sand while the waves quietly lap at the shore in the moonlight, but they're not wishing to be taken away; they're wishing they had even half a clue about what to do about Phosphophyllite. Maybe they should talk. Maybe...

The moment they actually see Phos approaching by the eerie light of that new eye, though-- ]
