[ So maybe Shin couldn't actually eat anymore. That was fine and expected; he'd been fully aware of the consequences of assuming a virtual form when he did it. But he could still remember how to cook and the taste of food and certain dishes. Day by day, spending time with the other few people that shared this little spaceship cabin, he was beginning to remember more about what humanity was really like - before Glass Cage and the human empathy project, before he learned about everything. And little by little, he was starting to open back up again. When they'd celebrated his birthday unexpectedly, he'd been pleasantly surprised - a feeling he hadn't had since that night on Tokyo Tower. But, moreover, he wasn't just pleased; he was grateful. That never happened.

Towards Seto, he especially felt gratitude. After all, he already owed him a great deal. Thus, for once, the bitter Shin felt like he ought to do something for someone, and that would be why he's in the kitchen, apparently making noodles. Just udon noodles.

Maybe he wasn't great at it, but he might as well try. ]

[ try his best at learning to cook cup noodles...? Only Seto. Shin's eyes remained trained on the noodles, but he nods. ]

[ and he pours it on in a little swirly shape, despite his pokerface. these noodles are gonna be SO SALTY... ]

[Salt>mold. He peers into the bowl to see the little swirls. Weird. Grandpa did that too, for whatever reason. When Seto was younger, it used to make him smile and that's a habit he's grown into.]

...Okay. I'll remember it's extra.

[ now you're getting the idea, Seto!! Shin pauses after he does it, remembering that he was actually making it to give to this kid and his friends if he so desired. Maybe he shouldn't have been making it to suit his own non-existent tastebuds. It's just how he's used to doing it. ]

... If you don't like it, it's fine. For a child, this might be too much.

[He immediately shakes his head.]

It's okay. This is how Grandpa made things. I'm used to it.

[There's a connection being made in his head right now though. Shin did a lot of stuff like his Grandpa. It was strange. After living here, Seto's used to people being very different in almost everything they do. ]

Hm.

[ a noncommittal answer. on the other hand, Shin isn't making any connections whatsoever. As far as he knew, Seto's grandpa was just some scientist who probably worked under him at some point. It could have been anyone. So he just stands there, watching the udon simmer. ]

I'm surprised he could find soy sauce.

[Seto never thought about it, but it was weird. There was always soy sauce on the table, even if there wasn't food to go with it.]

I'm not sure where he found it.

[Yes old man. Let your adoptive grandchild eat grass in the front yard. It's okay. As long as you have The Soy Sauce.]

[ Seto if you wanted soy sauce on your grass all you had to do was ask!! There's a "hmph" at that answer. ]

And bubble tea, I'm sure.

[ shin's drink of choice for long work nights staring at papers... ]

[You weren't that nice you didn't talk very much gosh!!!]

I think I heard him mention that. Um...I don't think he ever found some.

[Not like Seto knew what it was anyways. Tea made sense. The bubble part didn't. Maybe you could make bubbles with it.]

Of course not. That would be impossible. [ that's because you need milk for it GOD!! ]

Oh. Is bubble tea something you can make?

If you have milk.

That's at the...grocery store. Can we make some?

[ ... ]

... If you want to try it. Buying things for me is pointless.

[Even if Shin can't try it, maybe Seto can still get him a bubble tea toy...or something like that.]

Oh, right. Um. What other things do you like?

[ he pushes up his glasses. What did he like? Not a lot. ] Why are you asking?

Because I want to get you something that will make you smile.

[ and he stares blankly at Seto for a moment. This boy... Again and again, he'd surprise him like this, and Seto might be the only person in the world that Shin didn't think was capable of lying. Shaking his head, he smirks for just a half second before humoring him a little. ]

... Books. Handmade onigiri. The countryside. ... When I was alive. [ pause. ] Looking at the stars.

Okay.

[His expression brightens immediately when he hears the answer. The more Shin says, the more Seto realizes that Shin and his grandpa had so much in common. He doesn't know about onigiri, but there were plenty of books. ]

Mm. The stars are nice. They were beautiful on Earth. Grandpa had a telescope in the observatory...at the very top.

[ that... does seem to catch his attention. Before he'd transferred his memories into Glass Cage, he and the other scientists had tried to snatch up land once the disaster hit. He remembered buying an old observatory for that express purpose. ]

Seto. How far from Tokyo Tower was your home?

[He didn't expect that question, not that it's difficult to answer. Seto glances away, trying to think that far back.]

Uh...it didn't take me long to get there. It was still the end of summer when I left and...when I got there.

[Not exactly meters or centimeters but that should give him a good estimate.]

[ because that doesn't help... ]
